After months of looking, you’ve received more than one job offer! Sure, it’s an enviable problem, but the reality is that you have to decline one of the offers and you don’t want to make the wrong decision. Here are some tips that will help you decide which job is best for you:
Get all the facts. You can’t make a good decision unless you have all of the relevant information. Find out everything that you can about each position including the salary, hours, responsibilities, benefits, training opportunities, working environment, opportunities for advancement, and anything else that is important to you. Once you know exactly what you are being offered, it is much easier to assess which opportunity is best.
Look at the benefits of each offer. Try not to become overly preoccupied with salary. Keep in mind that the other benefits of the position may be just as or even more important to you. For example a job with a shorter commute or an organizational culture that is consistent with your values may mean more to you in the long term than a higher salary.
Consider your long term career goals. How would each position fit in with your career goals? If you are looking for a career and not just a job, it is important to consider where each position could potentially lead. Even if the salary is slightly lower, it may be beneficial to your long term success to select the job where there is an opportunity to grow within the organization.
Go with your gut. All the checklists, guides, gurus in the world are no match for your gut instinct when it comes to determining what is right for you. Which job would make you feel most excited about getting up in the morning? Of course you still need to consider all of the factors, but never ignore your gut.
Yes, this situation is a little stressful but don’t forget to celebrate. Getting one job offer is a great accomplishment and if you’ve received more than one then you have a right to be proud of yourself. Over the next few weeks you will be trying to navigate your first days on the job, but today you should eat some cake or have a glass of champagne to reward yourself for a job well done! Congratulations!
