Have you ever had a job where you mentally checked out as soon as you walked through the door? A job like that is dehumanizing and makes you feel like you are barely alive. It doesn’t have to be that way! Here are some tips that will help you find a job that you actually enjoy:
Follow your interests. What do you do for fun? What types of articles do you read online? What tasks do you usually take on when you are volunteering or doing other work in your community? People often reveal their true passions outside of their career. Make a list of your outside interests and you may find that you tend to gravitate to the same types of tasks and responsibilities.
Shift your focus away from money. When you are trying to find your passion, money can be a distraction. While you need a salary that is high enough to pay your bills, don’t allow money to be the number one factor in your decision. Sometimes you need to take a lower paying position to break into a new industry. It is also possible that the job you are passionate about will never pay the big bucks. However, you need to step back and determine what is most important to you .
Allow yourself some personal time. When you are just going through the motions of your daily life, it is easy to lose yourself and forget about what is important. You need to take a moment now and then to think about what you’re doing, what your dreams are and where you want to be in the future. This self-reflection could take the form of a daily meditation or it could mean taking off for the weekend for a little retreat. Often when we are alone and away from our daily demands, we can see things a little more clearly.
Start small. So you want to open a kangaroo sanctuary…okay…it is a unique and amazing dream. However, it may be challenging to get it started anytime soon. Don’t give up! Try to start small. Perhaps you could get a job at the zoo to get experience working with kangaroos or you could try to plan a trip to Australia to do work with kangaroos in their natural habitat. Take the road one step at a time and see where you end up.
Life is too short to be wishing your Mondays to Fridays away so that you can get to the weekend. You want to have a job that will make you leap out of bed in the morning. There are jobs like that out there and it is possible to make a living while doing something that you love. The key is to identify what get’s you excited and to make your passion a priority.
